We caught up with artist Che Lingo, the face of our launch campaign, to find out more about Che, his style, what’s coming up musically and his Mennace favourites…
Tell us all about Che Lingo
I’m a rapper from Wandsworth, (SW London). My name is a combination of my Family nickname Ché (pronounced ‘Shay’) and the word ‘Lingo’ meaning “common talk of the town”.
The moral of my unwritten story is “The Risk Is Proof” (TRIP) everything else I’m not afraid to say I’m still figuring out… including how to schedule my anime marathons and write some memorable bars.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Wake up, check my phone, exercise, shower, write some lyrics, (probably pick my nose somewhere in between this), watch some anime/cartoons online and write some more lyrics. The rest is one big “whatever the hell I feel like” tbh.
What’s your biggest achievement so far?
Being able to make music full time. I grew up with my grandma and she and my mum always had support and love for my musical ambitions but like any parent raising a young black boy on a council estate in south London, you fear for your child’s direction and influences. Being able to make music full time is something I genuinely cannot believe I was able to achieve and it’s the catalyst for the rest of this small yet significant journey. I don’t care if I never get to be famous, I just want to live and die doing what I love doing: rapping and being creative.
How do you feel about being involved in the Mennace campaign?
At Mennace’s core is the same essence and passion that made me not want to work for anyone and carve my own path with music.
I don’t want to follow anyone’s rules but my own, I don’t want to fit into anyone else’s life agenda (ultimately) because I was too scared to follow my own, I’m not afraid to be vulnerable and take some risks to see a goal achieved, the risk IS proof and if you have to be a bit of a mennace and take some risks to win, so be it.
Our synergy is perfect and I’m honoured right now to have been made the face of those ideals we share. The clothes are dope too! Lol.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Everything, I try to stay open minded and understand of new and old things, people, situations, mentalities and emotions. All those things can and do inspire me to write new songs daily.
Who are your major influencers?
Musically I respect the minds and creative pathways of people like Little Simz, Chance, Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, Sza, Joyner Lucas and Lil Dickie.
I don’t aspire to be like them. Just reach a point where I can manifest at that same level, whether it’s due to more money, more knowledge, more experience or just more time and patience.
What are your tips for success?
Don’t be afraid to lose and be vulnerable. The Risk Is Proof of your conviction to wanting to take control of yourself and your life. That plus consistency are the strongest ways to succeed in WHATEVER way. Always be polite and respectful too no matter what level you reach.
What’s your style?
Anything I like the look of that works for my body and my skin colour.
What’s your trademark piece of clothing?
My translucent glasses (which ARE prescribed YES lol), my nose ring and my hat.
What three things couldn’t you live without?
Love, Anime and Mangos.
Who’s on your playlist now?
Joyner Lucas, 808 Ink, Little Simz, Daniel Caesar, Kojey Radical, Skepta, Avelino, Chip, Ghetts, Sza, Hare Squead, Gold Link and Bonkaz.
Do you have any top tips for other artists?
Be honest, don’t entertain anything you’re not comfortable with and if you feel it, write it down.
What’s coming up in the rest of 2017?
I have a new single and EP this side of the year and a new music video too.
Anything else you’d like to shout about?
Nothing other than a thank you for asking and TRIP FOR LIFE!
