Denim Jacket Style Guide

Share

If you don’t own a denim jacket, you should. Durable, practical, and easy to layer, they are one of the most versatile pieces in any man’s wardrobe. But, knowing what to wear with a denim jacket can be difficult. Here are 4 of our favourite denim jacket outfits to give you some inspiration:

A classic blue-washed denim jacket will give you maximum cost-per-wear, because it really can be worn with anything. Wear with dark jeans, a white t-shirt, and white trainers for a casual mid-week evening at the pub, or with chinos and boots for a slightly more formal affair. If you’re feeling especially brave, make like the bloggers of Instagram and rock the controversial trend of double denim (the fashion equivalent of marmite). Break up the look with a bright t-shirt or belt, to bring the look up to date and avoid looking like a 70s throwback.

Darker denim washes make your jacket a little smarter, and more winter-appropriate. Black denim jackets are especially useful, and can be used interchangeably with blazers and leather jackets. This look is particularly effective when worn with black jeans, and teamed with a white t-shirt to make the outfit pop. At the other end of the spectrum, for a more casual feel, wear your jacket over a full tracksuit. Not only is this a look which will give you major style points in 2018, but it will also dress up a tracksuit for everyday wear.

Yes, it is possible to wear light coloured denim and not look like a pre-teen popstar. Go for an oversized trucker fit to give this look a more grown-up feel. Nail transitional dressing by going for all black underneath a white jacket, with slim fit black jeans and a black t-shirt (although keep your trainers white to pull together the monochrome theme). As the season begins to change, throw on your denim jacket over a patterned or striped t-shirt. When paired with distressed jeans this is a different look that really celebrates springtime.

A trend which is going to be seriously hot for high summer is extreme bleached denim. Giving a marble effect to the fabric, this washed out pattern gives interest to an outfit and is perfect for casual day wear. This is a look which really works with white jeans, as an almost-but-not-really nod to double denim. Make sure to create contrast with your chosen footwear. Wearing with brown boots will not only break up the pale colours, but will also toughen up the overall image, and make this look more autumn appropriate as the months pass.
